INDIA, Post-Gupta (Rashtrakutas). Gunatunga, circa 750-800. Damma (Silver, 8 mm, 0.37 g), Gunatunga, circa 750-800. Head of Gunatunga to right, wearing necklace. Rev. SRI GUNATUNGA (in Brahmi) below crescent. Jantakal, Kapadia & Jinjuvadiya, History and Coinage of the Rashtrakutas, S1.1.1. Very rare and nicely toned. Very fine.

These coins were misattributed by Mitchiner to Sankaragana, the 6th century Kalachuri king of Mahishmati. Recent research, however, suggests that Gunatunga was a Rashtrakuta ruler of the 8th century.
